Using Golf to Teach Honesty, Sportsmanship, Perseverance, and Courtesy

My name is Amber-Lynn Christensen and I have been involved with Pro Kids Golf Academy since 2014. I started playing golf at 14 years old when I joined Pro Kids as a student scholar. I am currently a sophomore attending Cuyamaca College. I study elementary education and my goal is be an elementary school teacher. At Pro Kids, I am an Up2Us Sports team coach at the City Heights location. I have a passion for golf and enjoy serving the youth. I coach golf while implementing life skills through informal instruction. Though a game of golf may not be as complicated as the life many of these kids have, it provides a small getaway that provides more than just a means of relieving stress of home and school. Golf works wonders for many children because the game at its basic core aims to teach them honesty, sportsmanship, perseverance, and courtesy. The best part of it, though, is that these ideas are introduced in a manner that is not seen as enforced to the kids. My favorite part of being a team coach is building relationships with staff and students through a sport we all share a bond over. It is remarkable to witness children making connections and sharing positive experiences through the game of golf. To witness children wanting to excel with golf is absolutely remarkable. Pro Kids has truly expanded my horizons and I am eager to continue to immerse myself in youth development.
