Through Up2Us Sports’ national coaching program, 300 AmeriCorps members will be trained to coach and mentor low-income youth to make better decisions, stay healthy, and reach their potential, through the power of sports. The $2.6 million in grants from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) will support AmeriCorps members nationally with added support from CaliforniaVolunteers, Serve Illinois, Volunteer Louisiana, PennServe and Serve Washington.
Over the past week, Up2Us Sports staff and coaches in Chicago, Miami and New Orleans have participated in the Corporation for National and Community Service’s (CNCS) MLK Day of Service. In 1994, Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of service and, fittingly, charged CNCS with leading this effort.
As my service term with AmeriCorps and Up2Us Sports comes to a close, I can only recall how invigorating and inspiring the Coaches Training in California was. Uncertain of what to expect and unsure if I could meet the expectations of a SBYD Coach, I couldn’t have anticipated how influential this training would be on my career as a coach and my personal growth.
