Up2Us Sports marks 15 years of empowering youth through sports and unveils a rebrand to expand its impact.
AmeriCorps announced that Up2Us Sports would once again receive critical funding for our national service coach program. Since 2009, AmeriCorps funding has allowed us to train and support over 3,900 coaches to significantly impact the lives of nearly 100,000 young people.
Welcome to a momentous occasion as we celebrate 14 incredible years of Up2Us Sports! Since our inception, we have been committed to empowering young people through the power of sports, national service and mentorship.
We hope you will read our latest Annual Report and we thank you for your support in helping us provide underserved youth with a coach who cares about them. This report covers our 2021-2022 program and fiscal year.
The Morgan Stanley Alliance for Children's Mental Health Innovation Awards—an initiative that aims to identify and fund mental healthcare solutions for children and young adults across the United States—honors a 2022 winner, Up2Us Sports.
Since before the inception of Up2Us Sports, AmeriCorps has been by our side, providing grants to support service members to serve as youth sports coaches nationally. They awarded our Founder and CEO, Paul Caccamo, a grant in 2009 which helped officially launch the organization as the first national service program for coaches in America.
Not only has AmeriCorps been integral to the people we serve and support, but it has also been integral to building the careers of many of our full-time staff members over the years. Over the past decade, numerous Up2Us Sports staff members have been service members at AmeriCorps-supported organizations before coming to work here.
In September 2019, it was announced that Up2Us Sports was one of 16 national organizations awarded funding as part of the Youth Engagement in Sports: Collaboration to Improve Adolescent Physical Activity and Nutrition (YES) Initiative from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and managed by Office of Minority Health (OMH).
On Monday, January 20th, 2020, Up2Us Sports staff and coaches in Chicago, Miami, New Orleans and Seattle participated in the Corporation for National and Community Service’s (CNCS) MLK Day of Service. In 1994, Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of service and, fittingly, charged CNCS with leading this effort.
While the initial groundwork for the organization began in 2008 when Founder & CEO Paul Caccamo received funding to run the first sports-based youth development conferences in major U.S. cities - which would later become the regional hubs for Up2Us Sports - our effective date of nonprofit exemption granted by the Internal Revenue Service was January 12, 2010.
As a child growing up just outside Los Angeles in La Puente (CA), DeAnna Tunstalle spent her summers playing sports and participating in summer camps in LA. Now, as the Senior Director II at Algin Sutton Recreation Center, she is the one in charge of ensuring that the park is providing services to meet the needs of the community.

As we look back over our last fiscal year, we celebrate the growth of our partnerships, the expansion of our content, and, most importantly, the impact we are having on sports and positive youth development.
